Fred D. Miller, Jr. received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Washington. Since 1972 he has been a member of the Department of Philosophy at Bowling Green State University, where he teaches Greek philosophy and political philosophy. He has had research fellowships at Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin, Princeton University, and Jesus College, Oxford University. He has also held visiting professorships at John Hopkins University and the University of Washington. In 1977, he was elected Chair of the Philosophy Department at Bowling Green. During his tenure, the department established a graduate program in applied philosophy. In 1981, Professor Miller became the first Executive Director of the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, a position he still holds. He has published numerous articles on Plato, Aristotle, and other Greek philosophers in such leading journals as Philosophical Review, Review of Metaphysics, Philosophical Quarterly, Journal of the History of Philosophy, History of Philosophy Quarterly and Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie. He has co-authored two philosophy textbooks, including Thought Probes: An Introduction to Philosophy through Science Fiction Literature, published by Prentice Hall. He co-edited A Companion to Aristotle's Politics, which has recently been published by Basil Blackwell. He is currently completing another book, Nature, Justice, and Rights in Aristotle's Politics.
